Baby C's Newborn Pprtraits

Oh my goodness, may I gush about Baby C's hair? So, so lovely!

I was so thankful that his mommy had the foresight to set up this session prior to his birth. We were able to photograph him at a mere 8 days old.

...before they know it, those little feet will be running around the house!

Wall of Fame Kids 2010-2011

Last year it was my privilege to photograph select patients of A Caring Touch Pediatrics and International Adoptions (ACT). My children, Ellie & Reni, are patients there (and have been since 2006) so I know first hand what personal, first class service they administer! It's an honor to partner with them in this endeavor!

Each summer ACT updates their office space with fresh portraits of their patients. The slideshow above highlights some of my favorites from each of the 30+ families photographed last spring.

If your children are current ACT patients, they are eligible to participate in this special promotion which includes a discounted session fee and 1-16x20 after it has hung in the office for one year (available for pick up June 1, 2012). There are a limited number of session openings (during the first two weeks of May), so contact me as soon as possible for the session times and locations which suit you best. Already some dates are FULL and only 4 gallery-wrapped canvas slots remain!

I had the opportunity to photograph a couple of Asbury student friends for their upcoming joint senior music recital in voice and piano, the culmination of four years of university training. The challenge for me: posing a male and female subject together who are not related (like siblings in a family session) nor dating/engaged/married. I think we succeeded in getting more than a few good shots for their posters and invitations. Here are a few of my favorites! Thanks for checking in!

It thrills my heart how much these two love each other. When we adopted Reni this past summer, we were concerned that Ellie would have a difficult time sharing her parents after having them to herself for nearly four years. Not a bit. It's like he filled a missing piece in her heart, just like he did ours. But really he didn't fill a missing piece, rather, he GREW our hearts. We're absolutely smitten with our little guy. And by "we", I mean me and my better half: Nathan. We joke that his first valentine's gift for me was an iced-tea maker. And I was really happy with the gift. Isn't that funny? That's the kind of practical girl I am. And he knows it -- who I am and what I like -- which is just one of the many, many reasons I love him. I love you, Babe!

Yesterday this little beauty arrived on my doorstep. I can't describe the satisfaction I feel when an album comes in. Like one wedding photographer has said, "It's like crossing the finish line." This is what your wedding images were intended for: a thoughtfully designed collection of portraits and images that tell the story of your wedding day. This is THE album your children will cherish when you are old and gray ;-)

Here are a few images of Micah and Rebecca's album and a few images of some album spreads. Their summertime, country weddings remains one of my favorites. Their package didn't include album credit, however about 18 months after their wedding they approached me with the request for an album design which they wanted to order as a Christmas gift to themselves. It wasn't quite ready for Christmas, but did arrive just in time for another holiday coming right up on us! Thanks, Micah and Rebecca! I trust you will enjoy this for years to come!

Dave & Alex's Wedding Album

The days approaching Christmas brought the FedEx truck several times to my door! Most boxes contained the leatherbound culmination of 2010 wedding photography endeavors. Before I reluctantly turn around and ship the albums to their intended homes, I photograph a few of them to remember them by. ;-) Especially if the end results exceeded my expectations. I just loved Dave and Alex's blue glove leather album cover with silver accents and modern font. You can view a few images of the actual album followed by some images of the digital design prior to development and manufacturing. (Please note that my logo does not appear on the actual album pages -- this is just for internet security purposes).

2010 is zooming to a rapid conclusion and I still have lots of photos that haven't yet made the blog! I couldn't let any more time pass, though, before sharing these from Adam and Christine's engagement session in Versailles. Having recently relocated in the Bluegrass to realize a long-time dream of owning a horse farm, Adam and Christine are planning for the next big venture in their lives: marriage! I'm excited to be photographing their June nuptials for a nearly entirely-out-of-town guest list, hailing from the east and west coasts and a few northern states in between. Wanting to share the best of their new home, Adam and Christine's wedding will be held none other than on their property. A farm girl myself, I was completely loving shooting all over their acreage, especially inside the barn. Enjoy a few of my favorite images...

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of photographing Shaun and Nicole's engagement photos. They are getting married in Maysville this June and I'm looking forward to their wedding at an historic home there! This was my first time to meet Shaun and he arranged for us the opportunity to shoot on a beautiful private farm in Woodford County. The weather was kind of iffy but somehow we managed to dodge cloudbursts and hailstorms that reportedly fell all around us, but nary a drop on us!

Nicole laughed that she doesn't do serious very well -- I thought they did just great! This was one of my favorites!

I think I could have shot all afternoon in the field above. I loved those skies and November light!

Wilmore Wedding Photography: Jessie + Zach, Part 2

When Jessie contacted me last winter about photographing her wedding, I was very touched. It's always an honor when someone asks me to serve as their photographer, but I knew Jessie back in her college days several years ago (in my pre-wedding photography days), and I had no idea she was even aware of my current work, let alone that she would consider me for the important role of documenting her wedding. (Photographing the wedding of a friend or acquaintance always serves as a great reminder what an intimate role the photographer plays in the wedding day, often witnessing up close & being in places and moments that close friends and even family members don't share, like the First Look).

When she told me her wedding date I was glad that I was available. When she told me her venue, I was positively giddy. Knowing the calendar, I knew there was a strong likelihood that two of Wilmore's most famous gingko trees would be in the height of their autumn glory. As you will see in some of the portraits below, the trees did not disappoint (and worked gorgeously with her colors)! When I asked Zach and Jessie how they chose their wedding date (thinking perhaps they knew about "the ginkos") Jessie laughed and said they chose their wedding date around the end of Zach's apartment lease!

It has been a pleasure, Jessie, to get reconnected with you through this experience and meet Zach, who seems a perfect match for you! Your wedding was a beautiful, God-honoring ceremony and it was a joy to spend the day with you, your family and friends. What a happy day that reminded me what a joy and privilege it is to do this!

P.S. Have you ever met a sweepstakes winner? If not, you're looking at one! I nearly forgot to share a neat side story that I hope Jessie doesn't mind me sharing. Earlier this fall as we were conversing about things like wedding timelines, she shared that she won the summer sweepstakes for David's Bridal! Mindful of and sensitive to the fact that so many in the world live in constant need, Jessie felt there were better uses for her resources (like giving them away to others) than to have an elaborate wedding, including settling for a less expensive dress. Because, in the end, contrary to what some would believe, to her it wasn't the most important thing. When Jessie learned that she had won the shopping spree prize, she was able to return her original dress, buy the dress her heart desired and purchase clothing for all the female members of her wedding party! Something about that story really touched me -- I believe that God saw her heart and chose to bless her for her selflessness, albeit not in the way that many might have anticipated!

Lexington Senior Photography: Tore

I love photographing senior sessions, and Tore's was no exception. While all portrait sessions are personal, senior sessions tend to be even more so, reflecting the subject's loves and interests at this pivotal moment in life. In Tore's case, she chose to feature her extracurriculars (volleyball), honor her farmer grandfather with some shots in a cornfield (my favorite of the locations we visited), and wrap herself in the flag of Haiti, a country and people which hold a special place in her heart. Tore, I wish you the best as you finish up your high school career! I had a wonderful time photographing you!

Lexington Wedding Photography: Jeremy + Tracy

Tracy was a particularly beautiful and photogenic bride, and I hope I wasn't overly gushy about how much I was in love with her gown -- all that taffeta that floated behind her wherever she walked. It was a challenge not to fill this post with just pictures of her! The camera loved her! We started off the afternoon at her parents' home with these first bridal shots in her childhood bedroom.

I love, love, love it when a couple chooses to do the majority of their portraits prior to the ceremony. It gives us more time to get some great photographs. As you can see, the "first look" moment is still very special.

Such stunning windows at First UMC... and a stunning couple too.

One of the reasons why I love shooting at the First United Methodist Church is the spectacular architecture! What texture!

I so enjoy witnessing the happiness of the wedding ceremony...

It's no secret that I'm supremely sentimental. I tear up at every wedding I shoot. The moments differ from wedding to wedding and at Tracy and Jeremy's it was during the mother-son dance. I can't say that it's a traditionally emotionally grabbing moment for me at most weddings, but on this evening it hit me that I could be in Mrs. Graham's shoes in a couple of decades. Having just become the mother to a son this summer, it suddenly changed my point of view and the emotion of it really caught me off guard. I love the way she's looking at Jeremy below and I think I'll be looking at my little guy the same way in a few years when I'm surprised to find him, all grown up and getting married himself.

Thank you, Jeremy and Tracy, for the opportunity to document your wedding day! I appreciate your kindess and wish the best for you as you embark on this next stage of life together!

Lexington Wedding Photography: Katie and Ben Are Married!

She worked at the bank where he was a customer. His loan officer suggested they go out to lunch on a blind date. The rest is history. A few years later they were gathered with their closest family and friends to become husband and wife.

While she loves her hot pink heels, he's more comfortable driving his pick up truck in cowboy boots. Nevertheless, after the ceremony when she gave him a peek of her garter (bedecked in camo with a deer charm), he exclaimed something to the effect of, "This woman really loves me!"

There is no question of their love though -- you can see it in the way they treat each other, in the happiness shining on their faces when they're together. When a bridesmaid delivered a card to Katie from Ben she said, "Awww, he dotted the 'i' with a heart!" explaining he's not a very gushy kind of guy. When Ben opened Katie's card, out slipped a letter. Ben was immediately wiping his eyes. Yes, it was a special day to celebrate a special love. And it's such a privilege to get to document moments like these for such kind people.

I want to give a special thanks to my wonderful college friend, talented photographer, Jan Graves, who traveled to Kentucky from Arlington, VA to visit and help me document the day. Many of the great detail shots in the inspiration board above are hers. FYI - the pendant on Katie's bouquet is actually a piece of her grandmother's costume jewelry (one half of a pair of ear rings) that young Katie would dress up in and declared she would one day wear at her wedding! I just had to share that.

If rain showers on your wedding bring blessing, then Dave and Alex will have buckets and buckets throughout their marriage! I drove through quite a lightening and thunderstorm the morning of their wedding! I shouldn't have been surprised because their wedding coordinator, Hollis Starks, had told me earlier in the month that it would rain on their wedding day. I was surprised that she would have such a strong intuition about the weather, but she filled me in that the Farmers Almanac was unusually accurate and I have to hand it to her, she was right! (Thankfully I was early and the weather tapered off by the time we were ready to begin photos)

The rest of the day was beautiful. From Alex's gown, to the amazingly creative florals by Boston's Floral Coutour, and the color-saturated reception at River Bend Winery, there was much for the eye to enjoy. But a wedding is more than just beautiful details, it's about the significance of the day, the establishment of a new family, and the joy shared in fellowship with family and friends. Alex and Dave had this in abundance as well. I think you will be able to see this in the photos below!

Alex and David were married in the historic Calvary Episcopal Church in downtown Louisville (on 4th street). And yes, those are peacock feathers in the bouquets!

Alex discovered her bridesmaids dresses in Israel. The tops can be worn seven different ways, including off the shoulder! They looked extremely comfortable! I loved the peacock paired with the men's gray suits.

I really enjoyed their wedding party, game to try some fun shots!

Hollis found these beautiful black birdcages that served as striking centerpieces and pulled off the "Moroccan" vision Alex and Dave had for the reception. Guests were treated to a Greek menu, reflective of a place special to Dave and Alex as the site of their engagement!

One of my favorite candid moments captured during the day (above). I was so glad they took time to enjoy several dances together on the dance floor -- (it's harder than you think given the number of guests you want to visit with).

Dave's two best men gave toasts, both touching and humorous.

Everyone had a great time on the dance floor, singing their hearts out!

Here's the reason...

Here's the reason for my silence this summer... this 13-month-old loveable bundle of joy finally came home on August 22! Over the past week he's been a sweetie (just as he was when we visited him over the course of several weeks in Albania), seemingly adjusting well to his new home and family. The nights, on the other hand, have been a tad more difficult. Blame it on jetlag, or -- as we learned yesterday -- double ear infections, the fitful nights are hopefully temporary! In the mean time, we are grateful to have our family under the same roof, back in the good ol' US of A! We are so blessed. Stay tuned for pics from Dave and Alex's Louisville wedding!

Lexington Children's Photography: the "K" Kids

We didn't know if this session was going to happen ... you know, the whole "rain thing." But looking at our schedules, finding another time to get together (shy of taking photos at 7AM on a Saturday morning) appeared to be quite difficult. So we started out by taking a few pictures on the porch, then moving out to the sidewalk with Mom and Dad holding umbrellas over the kids and removing them at the last minute to snap a few pics and then returning them (the boys were wearing silk shirts from India and you know that silk shows water spots!). The drizzle appeared to subside for a few minutes so we ventured out into the yard. Then before we knew it, we had the session in the bag! I had a lot of favorites from that evening, but here are just a few. Enjoy!

P.S. The blog might be quite quiet for a while -- we are traveling for several weeks to adopt our little guy, David! I will post photos sometime next month, hopefully!

Lexington Family Photography: The "D" Family

I love meeting families formed through adoption. My husband and I adopted our daughter, Ellie, from Albania in 2006 and we're preparing to adopt a son (also from Albania) this summer. When I chatted with Myra over the telephone to plan this session, there was an instant connection through our adoption experiences. Having hiked that path of mountains of paperwork and ridden the rollercoaster of emotions associated with such an endeavor gives us the ability to speak the language of adoption 'talk' which can truly sound foreign to anyone else!
Last August the "D" family brought home their son from China and have started the process to bring home another little boy later this year, Lord willing. I wish them the best and share in their joy over another little one finding a family in them.

I was so pleased when Myra took my suggestion to have this image (above) printed as a 10x20. The panoramic format suited this pose so well, I want to do something similar for our family when we become four!

In addition to the carefree nature of the image above, I also love how it freezes in time this stage of life. In how many more years will those younger girls be able to look at their mom eye-to-eye? I can also see how the two oldest love their little brother and his zest for life. ;-)

They're up! Over thirty families participated in this year's Wall of Fame promotion to decorate the offices of A Caring Touch Pediatrics! It was a privilege to serve as this year's photographer and meet so many wonderful families. Thank you for the honor of photographing your kids! Wilmore Kentucky Wedding: Rachel + Michael

It was a warm and sunny Sunday at the end of May when Rachel and Michael wed after a long courtship. Family and friends drove from the eastern and western parts of Kentucky, converging on my lovely "home" town of Wilmore for their nuptials.

Rachel was tickled by her handbag from Etsy.com that included her wedding date on the personalized tag. I loved it too!

I love how goofy these two are together (they had moments like this during their engagement session too). Hope they don't mind that I am posting these! (I may have told them I was just testing my camera settings...)

Special, special thanks to Jennifer (far left) who referred me to Rachel! It's always special to have a friend in the bridal party!

Beautiful florals provided by Curtis A. Grace, hair and make-up by Ziyan Salon and Spa (can I say I was pleasantly surprised to learn the girls were done with hair and make 45 minutes EARLY thanks to the efficient and proficient hands at Ziyan? That hardly ever happens!).

Rachel and Michael's parents brought some momentos from their weddings to the reception, including a toss bouquet and cake topper! Rachel also made the fun backdrop for a personalized photo booth for her guests! In addition to traditional wedding cake, dessert included Michael's favorite (and mine!) rhubarb pie!

Louisville Engagement Photos: Jessie & Zach

One of the things I've loved about photography is how it has reconnected me with friends and acquaintances from the past. A few months ago I was tickled to get an e-mail out of the blue from a girl I used to work with at Asbury's Admissions Office ('way' back, about 10 years ago). Jessie was writing to let me know that she was getting married and interested in me shooting her wedding! I was thrilled that she would ask me and even happier when everything was official for me to photograph her November wedding back here in Wilmore at Asbury Theological Seminary.

One of my favorite kinds of shoots are engagement sessions. They're wonderful 'warm up' sessions for the wedding day in a much more relaxed enviroment. Jessie and Zach chose to have their enagement pics taken at their church: Southeast Christian in Louisville. Their campus has a really fun student ministry building called "The Block" featuring a coffee shop, theatre, game area, and even a rock climing wall! There were all kinds of fun places to shoot and time was our only constraint. Special thanks go to John, a mutual friend, and staff member who came over on his free Saturday afternoon and gave us access to the space!

Miss L was a quiet kind of girl. She didn't say much but would comply with my request to 'stand here', 'sit there', 'turn your head this way,' etc. At the end of our time together she still hadn't said much but when I got a peek at her blue fingernails, I had a feeling "L" had bunches of personality I hadn't gotten to see but wanted to know! I was glad to learn that she attends the same school as my daughter and I look forward to bumping into her now and again (as I did today) in the years ahead!

I have been waiting a few weeks to post these images -- waiting because they were a surprise for a certain birthday guy (Erika's hubby & Baby L's daddy, Peter)! The session was a real treat because it allowed me to reconnect with Erika and her mom, Barb, and meet sweet baby L. (I say 'reconnect' because Nathan and I video-ed Erika and Peter's wedding back in my pre-official-photography days). As you can see, L was a real gem, generously sharing some fantastic smiles. Last weekend provided the special treat of spending some time with Michael and Rachel at one of Kentucky's most spectacular natural treasures: Red River Gorge. And the fresh snowfall on the ground was literally the prettiest icing on our landscape. Rachel and Michael were great sports, climbing up and down trails and sitting in cold snow on even colder rocks as I asked. I believe sign language was even employed at one point when I couldn't shout over the roar of flowing water. (I can't imagine how that looked!) And it all was fun (at least for me -- I was able to dress in multiple layers, probably resembling the abominable snowman because after all, I wasn't the one being photographed). If they were cold, they never complained! But enough writing... here's a sampling of my favorites:

Emily Turns 6 Months

What a treat it was to photograph baby Emily again. The last time I snapped her photo, Emily's eyes barely opened as she dozed peacefully while I clicked away. This time, she grinned and smiled making my task a pleasant experience. Her mama brought lots of fun things to wear so we tried a lot of different looks. I'm having a difficult time choosing a favorite!

Free tip: after newborn shots, the 'sitting-up-but-not-crawling' stage is a great time for photographs!

Friday night I got an e-mail with the wonderful news that our friends, Ricky and Aiden had delivered their long-awaited baby girl. Last night I tried to photograph Ellie for her Valentine's day cards -- I was designing something cute and just needed a quick photo of her in front of a pink backdrop, maybe holding a flower or two. Talk about pulling teeth. I finally got a picture that would work...56 clicks of the shutter later.

No, just because I take her photograph frequently doesn't make my daughter a more compliant subject. If anything, it might make her worse! This morning while getting ready for school with a grin she said (of the previous evening's photo session), "Mommy, I was goofy!" Uh uh. Obviously she didn't grasp how much she had tested my patience!

While I'm saving last night's photo for a later posting so as not to spoil any surprises for grandparents or other card recipients, I will share a photo from this afternoon. Here she is showing off a craft from her preschool unit on household pets. Oh how I love this girl!

Over Christmas I had the opportunity to photograph my niece, Tua. This was a special treat becauseshe lives in Vermont and taking her photograph is not something I get to do but a couple of times a year, if I'm blessed! My mom has a dress in which she has requested all grandaughters be photographed and this Christmas it was Tuey's turn. Of course, like most newly-turned-three-year-olds, it's hit or miss if she's in the mood to model for the camera. We had some tears at times, but it wasn't anything a few Pez candies couldn't cure.

I kept this one because in spite of the fanciness of her dress, she's still a child at heart and at this point in the session she was running and jumping off the couch and crashing on an ottoman while I tried to snap a few pictures in the split second she was actually still. Gotta love all that energy! ;-)

Adam and Erica's Lexington Wedding Photos

Just a few days before Christmas I had the pleasure of documenting Adam and Erica's Lexington wedding. I was thrilled to wake up the morning of their wedding and find a light layer of snow on the ground! I've been dying for some wedding snow photos, even though it only lasted long enough for some details shots! Surrounded by numerous family and friends, Adam and Erica wed in Southland's wedding chapel and enjoyed a buffet and dancing at the Hilton Suites at Lexington Green. Congratulations, Adam and Erica! It was a beautiful day!

"Best Friends" and a Story

Before sharing today's images, let me briefly share the impetus for my recent trip to Alb*nia.

It starts with a story that took place last winter. My dad was walking through the village of Vl*sh when he was stopped on the road by an elderly gentleman. The fellow said to my father, "Sir! We know you are the man with the camera!"
[editorial note: my dad is where I learned a love for photography, and this gentleman was right to know that Dad never goes anywhere without his camera]!
He continued, "Can you come to my home and take a photo of my wife? She is dying and I have no photos to remember her by!" (be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to read the rest of dad's story)

I was touched that this man wanted a tangible reminder of his wife, and saddened that he most likely didn't have many, if any, photos of her during happier times in life. It clicked (pardon the pun) that I could easily bring my camera and photograph anyone in the village who would want to have their photo taken. Dad and I decided to plan my trip around Thanksgiving. Given that November weather could be incredibly unpredictable with limited daylight hours, and that we had no idea how many would respond to the offer of a free family portrait, I decided early on to bring my portable studio and set up in the ministry's building centrally located in the heart of the community.

In spite of spreading the word ahead of time about "picture day", the response was a bit slow. Early in the day, the bulk of our 'takers' were the kids who hang around the center playing soccer. Eventually some mothers came with their children, and even a few dads showed up. We shouldn't have been too surprised though because it's just not something that many families do -- go to a professional photographer to have a family portrait made, much less display family photos around the home. Nevertheless, I knew that once they had a photo in hand, it would be received well and treasured because I had visited enough homes and seen my father's photographs prominently displayed (usually the only photographs in the home).

We went to the city and had prints made from the studio session. Upon returning to the village and distributing the first few prints, word spread like wildfire and person after person appeared at the center and were requesting to get their picture. That was even more fun than taking the photos! While I had hoped to get more family photos, I started to fall in love with these photos of the younger generation with their friends. Here are a few of my favorites:

Now, to finish my dad's story from last winter... When he reached the elderly gentleman's home, my dad was surprised to find his 'dying' wife was not really on her deathbed, instead, she was hoe-ing a patch of potatoes! I don't know if there was a loss in translation or an exaggeration of circumstances, but regardless, as they say, "the rest is history."

The "K" Family

In the last ten or so years of their time in Albania, my parents have invested the bulk of their energies in a particular community located between the capital city and the Adriatic. The fruit from that time has been relationships with some really great people. The "K" family is an example of one of those. One of my favorite memories from my last visit was an incredible supper at their home - an opportunity to experience their generosity and hospitality. I know I sound like a broken record, but again, these kids (Anselmo and Anseda) have grown UP! When I first met them, they were grade-school age, and now they're preparing for university! It's been a pleasure to get to know their parents a little better now too. Mr. K gave one of my father's favorite quotes from an Albanian. In response to the question, "What is the best place in your country?", Mr. K responded without skipping a beat, "The village in which my wife was born." Isn't that sweet?

The "Z" family

Here is set number 2 from my collection of family portraits in Albania. This family is particularly special to me! I've known this family since I was a college student and the twins were infants. I couldn't get over how GROWN UP the kids have become, while their parents haven't changed a bit (wink!). Darla (the youngest) apparently just lost her front teeth and didn't feel comfortable giving me a full smile, but did everything else I asked! Sarah (named after my mom, isn't that cool?) is such a pretty young woman. And yes, Kelly, that is an Univ. of ILLINOIS t-shirt that Kadje is wearing under his sweater!

The "P" family

While in Albania last month I had the pleasure of photographing the 'P' family. The parents, Genti and Shpresa, have worked with my parents in village ministry for almost four years. This was my second opportunity to meet them and get to know them better, a very nice and gracious family!

My mom had the idea to shoot here, at the offices of VUSH, which occupy a former embassy building in the heart of Tirana. I wish she lived closer by to serve as my permanent location scouter! Given that the sun sets SO early, our biggest challenge was finding light at 3 in the afternoon after the kids were out of school!

The goal of the session was to make a photo to send in their church Christmas letter. I think we were able to get more than a few options to choose from!

European Gowns

Over Thanksgiving week last month I had the privilege of traveling to the country of Albania. I embarked upon a long-anticipated photography project and have lots of images to share in the coming weeks here on this blog! While in country, I stayed at my parents' downtown Tirana apartment, but took many trips out into surrounding communities and up into the mountains. Gazing out the van window on those many trips is always interesting because over the course of the past 15 years (since my first of eight visits to this small country) I've seen quite a few changes as this land, people, and economy has transitioned from communism. I like to see what kinds of businesses are flourishing and which new products finding their way to market; essentially see capitalism at work (little known fact: I studied economics at the graduate level).

My parents' neighborhood is now just a few blocks from some of the nicest shopping in the country. One night as we drove home we rolled past a stunning window display unlike anything I had seen there before. Because of the high cost of storefront space, most vendors cram as much merchandise into their displays as possible, because after all, you never know what that pedestrian might be shopping for. This particular display was eye catching in its simplicity: three white wedding gowns in a black room.

Realizing I had found some rich blog content, I added it to my mental list of places to return. A few nights later I came back and snapped thse photos. Apparently I lingered too long because I was shoo-ed away and scolded. I understand some Albanian, but even if I hadn't, the shopkeeper's message was still clear -- my photos were not welcome! If you are interested in any of these Spanish-designed beauties, they can be yours for a mere $5-6K!

Kami is a free-lance writer, occasional nomad, coffee officianado, thinker, and good friend. She suggested a couple of great places to capture some headshots and brought some props that reflected her lifestyle and interests! Yes -- I am out of the country, but have some 'down' time to share these pics that have been sitting on my computer for a while. Earlier this month I had the pleasure of meeting this little family who lives not too far from me. We met together for a late-afternoon session to make some photographs for the holidays. I love photos like the last one because time is so fleeting and before you know it, these young ones will be up to momma's shoulder, then her chin, then looking down on her from above! The end of the year is approaching. We are down to six (yes, 6) weeks until Christmas! I am spending many evenings working late into the night retouching images so they might be ordered and transformed from computer coding of zeroes and ones into beautiful, tangible pieces of art for years of enjoyment on a coffee table or on a wall. As an early 'year in review', I thought I might share with you some pieces of work from this year's weddings. Tonight I'm highlighting Justin and Jennifer's spring wedding at St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Signature Club. It was a gorgeous spring day -- the weather couldn't have been better! The "C" Kids

Aren't these children just the sweetest? I grew up in a family of all girls and often wondered how different life would have been had we had a brother. Watching these two interact brought back some of those thoughts. In between snapping some of those obligatory posed photos, I knew these two had relaxed when they picked up sticks -- er, um, swords -- and started shouting, "En Garde!" I don't recall Musketeers being one of those games that my sisters and I played, but it looked like fun!

After taking someone's photograph, I don't often have the privilege of seeing what they do with their finished prints or wall art (aside from those used in albums)! You can imagine my excitement when Amber described the famed wall collage she made with her engagement photos. I asked her to take a snapshot of itbecause I REALLY wanted to see how it turned out.

She was so sweet to oblige and then gave me permission to share here on the blog with you all! I love the combination of color and black and white photographs. I think it really lets your eye move around the collage, yet enjoy each image independently.

The M Family

A few years ago (five and a half, to be exact -- and I remember because our dog was a wee pup at the time), our church had an optional summer social called "Suppers Six". Over the three months of summer six individuals (or three couples) would get together for supper one evening per month. The groups were put together by someone at church and the point was to get to know others better in our congregation. We decided to participate in the event and were matched with the H's and the M's. It was nice to get to know better people that we had seen on Sundays but didn't really know -- and over good food in each other's homes. I'm glad that we all continue to attend the same church and now continue to see each other in the church nursery/preschool as we all have kiddos!

I was excited when Carrie contacted me this summer to request a photo session for her family. We decided to wait until the fall as Carrie wanted a photo for her Christmas cards while planning it close to her children's birthdays. Not long ago said session took place and here are some of my favorites! Don't these children have the most beautiful BLUE eyes? Thank you, M family! We love you guys!

Matthew and Jessica's Paris, Kentucky Wedding Photos

I love how every wedding is so unique and personal to the couple getting married. For Jessica and Matthew, it began with their wedding location, the Cane Ridge Meeting House outside of Paris. Jessica grew up on a farm adjacent to this amazing, historic site (built in 1791, it's believed to be the largest one-room log structure in North America and was the site of one of the largest Protestant revivals in the U.S.).

Jessica incorporated many vintage touches to her day. Her bridesmaid gifts were antique pieces of jewelry which many of them wore for the wedding.

How do you get groomsmen interested in bouttonnieres? Attach unique fly fishing lures to each one! How neat is that?

The reception was held at the Wallis House, home of the Garden Club of Kentucky. Jessica collaborated with a friend of Matthew's mother to design a woodlands-meets-french-country elegant party. It was beautiful!

John David & Jessica's Memphis Wedding Photos

It sounds cliché, but it’s truly a privilege to document someone’s wedding through photography. It’s an even greater privilege when it’s a friend! I met Jessica back when she was a college student. She was involved in the student missions fellowship which my husband and I have the pleasure of facilitating at Asbury College. As ‘our students’ are want to do, Jessica completed her time in Wilmore and went on to graduate school in Nashville. I followed with interest when she took trips in medical missions to places in Africa and the Middle East. Upon graduation from Vanderbilt, I wasn’t terribly surprised when I heard that she was working at a clinic in Memphis, serving a primarily African refugee population, since she had done similar work during her time in Nashville. Furthermore, she had spent the first 12 years of life with her family in Kenya and I knew she was happiest when serving her African friends.

I was surprised and delighted when she contacted me this spring to announce that she was engaged. I didn’t have to think twice when she asked if I would consider serving as her wedding photographer! I must admit I was really curious about this man she was going to marry and it was such a joy to meet John David in person. He seems perfectly suited for her and I wished I had more than just that day to spend with them both.

In planning their wedding, Jessica and John David desired to marry in the community in which they work, live, and worship so their friends could all attend. I wish I could describe their wedding ceremony, but words won’t do it justice! It was just really, really special. They married in their friend’s back yard on a beautiful October Saturday evening. The service was rich in content and meaning, highlighted by the beautiful singing of their church friends. The reception, just a few doors down the street, was quite the party, with lots of joy, Ale 8, barbeque and kids! Enjoy these highlights from their day!

Drew and Kelsey's Wilmore Engagement Photos

I really enjoy taking engagement photos and Drew and Kelsey's were no exception. These two (as you can see) are great friends with the camera and selecting images for this post was quite difficult! We had fun shooting here in little 'ol Wilmore and I love that even in a "familiar" place, I can find new places to shoot. I promise for the railroad track photo we were literally just crossing the tracks and snapped like three pics. ;-) Drew and Kelsey -- thanks for a fun evening and enjoy these days of being engaged! Lee and Naresha's Lexington Wedding

Everything came together beautifully a few weeks ago for Lee and Naresha's wedding. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the details were perfect. Even if nothing had come together right, I doubt you would have been able tell from these two. You could tell how genuinely happy this couple was to be marrying and it made my task of photographing their wedding a real joy. Add to that sweet family and friends, and it was a wedding I didn't want to leave!

Other favorite memories from this wedding...

The bride's adorable 7-month-old twin niece and nephew. They had bibs which read, "The bride is my aunt".

The beautiful architecture of Lexington's First United Methodist Church -- the columns, the steps, the texture of the stone are all perfect for formal occasions like this. Add to that their coordinator Bonnie, who's just a nice, pleasant lady to work with. Just as we were photographing the bridal party, the sun hit the towering 5/3 Bank Building a few blocks away and bounced beautiful afternoon light on the steps, providing the largest reflector I've ever worked with. It was serendipitous.

When the bridal party arrived at the Marriott for their recepion (where Lee and Naresha work and met), it was so neat to see many of the hotel staff on hand at the car port to congratulate them as they exited the limo. Over and over I saw how much this couple is loved by their family and friends -- and it's not hard to see why.

Finally, it was fun to hear the tunes of a band (Funk Seminary) started by our old college friend, Mike Vandemark. They kept the party going!

Cousins

Last month I was excited to be able to attend the annual reunion of my Whiteford family (my mom's sisters' & cousins' families). I was especially excited because I have some cousins who were close friends/playmates growing up but have moved far, far away and can't feasibly come to the Midwest for the reunion every year. One morning after everyone was fed and before we took off for the rock climbing wall and zipline (yeah, my cousin Elyse and Aunt Marcia know how to plan a reunion!), I took some quick family photos of my Jenkins cousins' families and kids outside the B&B where we were staying.

Here's Sam. Big brother and Star Wars officianado. (Funny thing is, I remember playing Star Wars with his dad and uncle nearly 30 years ago -- otherwise, having no brothers, I'd probably still be saying "Star Whuh?").

Here's Maya. She likes Star Wars as much as her brother. She's also got a small role in her Dad's film and I can't wait to see her on the big screen! I'm sure she did GREAT!

Sweet Beannie. Bean made my day during the weekend when she came over and sat in my lap.
When years go between visits, you can't expect kids to really even know who you are, let alone warm up to you immediately, but I was so glad that she felt comfortable enough with me that she sought my lap as a place to rest.

Here's Isaac. He's the little cousin of the kids above. He wasn't thrilled at first to have his photo taken... until he was given a croquet ball that he started throwing at the photographer... with amazing accuracy -- thank goodness for lens hoods! (Maybe it has something to do with the athletic genes he inherited from his collegiate baseball coaching dad?)
